Steyr Grünburg

This beautiful beat surrounded by amazing landscape with approximately 5,1 km length is situates near to the romantic city of Steyr, next to the town Grünburg on the northern border  of the Austrian “Kalkalpen” The Steyr is here already a mighty river with about 30 meter width, but still shows its typically structure with very various pictures. Not without reason is this particular beat just about legendary amongst European fly-fisher. The river is shaped with three big weir systems. In the upper part is the so called “Haunold Mühle”, downstream right in the middle the “Steinbacher Town Weir” and further down the river is the “Humpelmühle” which is also the lower end of the beat.

Starting at the upper border, easy to recognize by the “Pernzeller – brook” joining down to the 1st weir the river is rather fast flowing, surrounded by forest and conglomerate rocks.  Nearer the town, down to the lower border it flows in several big bends with shallow areas and deep pools. Near the weir it obviously becomes slower and deeper.

The stock is dominated by brown trout and rainbows in the typical areas the rather famous “Steyr Grayling” can be found in good numbers and big fish are definitely no exception here. The rich natural stock was supported by a re-rising program for the Steyr-Grayling planed and accomplished over the last years by the river management. The minimum size for the grayling was set to amazing 45 cm and fish bigger than that  are being caught frequently. The amounts of brown trout’s and rainbows are about the same since the river with is high variety of streams offers ideal feeding and spurning grounds for both sorts. Regulars of the Steyr-Grünburg come with the car from as far as lower Italy as well as for example Hamburg, just to fish a weekend in this beautiful water – they know why! Not at last our guests value the personal service by our beat manager Hans Aigner and the river guards Rudolf Fallent and Fritz Gradauer very high. They show a friendliness and helpfulness going far beyond their duty. At request Mr. Fallent will be happy to organize accommodation.

We recommend strongly to reserve day tickets well in advance to prevent disappointment. Best is you talk directly to Mr. Fallent ++43 7257 7717 or ring our office in Vienna: ++43 1 586 5278. Actual water levels can be found on our homepage www.oefg1880.at. On request we´ll be happy to look after accommodation.
