The river Melk is situated at the foothills of the Alps in Lower
Austria, 5 km long and about 7-10m wide.
It is managed as trout river, in the upper part of its course,
however, suffering from the consequences of harsh regulation, in
the central part it has already been revitalized
whereas the lower part has completely been left unspoilt, a fishing
area with mixed water which is the home of Danube salmons, carps
and whitefish. A former bend of the river Melk – today separated
from the flowing water – constitutes a back water area inviting
for pike and carp fishing.
It is compulsory to have an official fishing-or guest license for
Lower Austria.
